Long Island Man Gets 10 Yrs. In Prison For Bar Crawl Stabbing: Nassau DA

Martin Carpio was convicted on June 4 of first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, prosecutors said.

MINEOLA, NY — A North Bellmore man was sentenced on Friday to 10 years in prison for stabbing a stranger during a 2023 St. Patrick's Day bar crawl celebration, prosecutors said.

Martin Carpio, 36, was convicted by a jury on June 4 of first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced.

Carpio was acquitted of second-degree attempted murder and two counts of third-degree attempted assault.

"Martin Carpio instigated an argument with strangers, escalated to physical violence, and targeted his rage at a 21-year-old young man when he twice plunged a three-and-a-half-inch blade into the victim’s chest," Donnelly said. "The extensive injuries this defendant so viciously caused nearly cost the young man his life. Instead of recognizing the magnitude of what he had done, Carpio gloated and reveled in his cruelty after the stabbing."

March 4, 2023, the victim along with several friends attended an event called "LepreCon," a St. Patrick’s Day bar crawl on Main Street in Farmingdale.

The four friends ended their night at The Dominican Restaurant for drinks and food. They met more friends at the restaurant, including a mother, father and their two daughters, aged 21 and 15, Donnelly said.

At approximately 1:50 a.m., Carpio and a friend entered the restaurant. Carpio approached the 15-year-old girl, grabbed her arm, and made advances on her, Donnelly said.

An argument ensued between the girl’s father and Carpio, who punched the man in the throat, the D.A's office said.

During a scrum with multiple people outside, Carpio pulled out a knife. Ultimately, he grabbed the victim’s shirt collar and swung his knife, stabbing the young man twice in the upper left rib cage.

He was hospitalized with a collapsed lung, punctured spleen and diaphragm, and a fractured rib, Donnelly said.

"Today’s lengthy prison sentence holds the defendant accountable for the suffering that he caused this victim and his loved ones," Donnelly said.
