LI Library With 1st-In-State Calming Space For Special Needs Children
The North Bellmore Public Library has installed a Sensory Nook for children who have disabilities and special educational needs.

NORTH BELLMORE, NY —The North Bellmore Public Library is supporting children of all ages with special educational needs and disabilities.
It has become the state's first public library with an IBCCES-certified autism resource Sensory Nook Pod.
"We take great pride in the fact that we are the first public library in New York State to offer an adaptable and inclusive space for neurodiverse children," said Jessica Tymecki, Director of the NBPL. "The North Bellmore Public Library recognizes there is a growing need for a sanctuary and calming space that affords every child with the opportunity to be their best self."

The Nook Pod is a highly inclusive adaptable space that is particularly effective for neurodiverse patrons including those with autism, ADHD and dyslexia. Equipped with comfortable seating for one to four persons, the Nook is a quiet sanctuary that boasts a table and bench seats, color- changing lights and a fiber-optic carpet wall panel with twinkling light effect.
"I am thrilled to have helped secure this grant for the library that allowed this unique workspace to be added to serve neurodiverse children," said Legislator Michael Giangregorio (R-Merrick), who has been a long-time advocate for increasing awareness and supporting efforts to help children and families affected by autism.

Originally designed to create emotionally intelligent workspaces for one-to-one and small group tasks, Nook found that adding some enhancements created a space that could greatly improve mood, reduce challenging behavior, and lower anxiety levels.
