Mepham Crowns Senior Citizen Prom King and Queen

Dorothy Schiavone of Bellmore remembered when she attended her high school prom in 1947.

"It was a long time ago," she smiled.

On Wednesday night, Schiavone went to the second prom of her lifetime and was named Prom Queen.

Mepham High School hosted its 10th Annual Senior Citizen Prom on Wednesday.  The event was coordinated by the school's chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).

More than 100 seniors enjoyed a night of dinner and dancing with entertainment provided by the Mepham Jazz Ensemble and the Select Chorus. The king and queen were chosen by a raffle.

Ted Dralus, Mepham's Prom King, laughed and talked with others while wearing his blue and gold crown.

"The prom was cute," the Levittown resident said. "It was really cute."

Schiavone said that she was surprised that she was named queen.

"It was very dramatic," she laughed. "I did not expect it."

Principal Michael Harrington said that he was impressed with the seniors and Mepham students.

"It was a heartwarming experience," he said. "Our SADD program did a phenomenal job and it makes me glad to be part of this community."
