Mepham's LaSpina Was 'Shocked' To Make LI Football History
'That was crazy' upon finding out Sofia LaSpina was the first female to score a touchdown in a Nassau or Suffolk County.

BELLMORE, NY — It's been a wild ride for Sofia LaSpina since catching a four-yard touchdown pass on Sept. 18.
When she crossed into the end zone, the Mepham High School junior broke the glass ceiling as the first female to ever score a touchdown on Long Island.
LaSpina had no knowledge of the historic nature of the catch, nor did anyone associated with the team.

"I was very shocked. I still couldn't process what was going on," LaSpina said.
But that didn't stop her celebrity status from growing as she was honored by the Town of Hempstead and the New York Jets, who named her High School Player of the Week. Head coach Robert Saleh wore a Mepham shirt and the legendary Joe Namath tossed some passes to her.
LaSpina will be the Jets' guest for their game this Sunday against the Titans.
Her Mepham teammates have been caught up in the excitement as well.
"They are still very supportive about everything," LaSpina said.
Accolades aside, LaSpina's main sport is softball, and she will decide in her senior year which sport to peruse for college.
"If I'm doing really [well] and I feel that I can get into a good college with it, then I might try it out," she said. "But as of now, I'm looking toward softball."
