North Bellmore Residents Vote Down School District Bond Referendum

The $39 million proposition would have provided renovations for the aging schools.

NORTH BELLMORE, NY — Residents voted down a $39 million bond referendum on Thursday.

More than 1,100 residents cast their ballots in the North Bellmore School District, with 628 voting against the bond proposition. There were 533 votes in favor of the renovations.

"This was a very close margin, with over 45% approval to upkeep the district's aging infrastructure," Superintendent Marie Testa said.

Several buildings are between 65 and 98 years old, the district said.

Upgrades would have included new HVAC systems and elevators for the schools, 32 years after the Americans with Disabilities Act became law.

Despite the bond failing, Testa said: "We are committed to working strategically to address necessary capital projects and recommendations as indicated in the district's Buildings Conditions Survey."
