Hit-and-Run Driver in Custody After Striking Motorcycle Cop
The Nassau officer is in critical, but stable condition, police say.

NORTH BELLMORE, NY – A Nassau County Police officer is in critical, but stable condition after his motorcycle was involved in a crash with a hit-and-run driver Saturday morning, police said.
The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Bellmore Avenue and Davenport Place in North Bellmore. The officer, who News 12 identified as George Day, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center.
The driver of the other vehicle, 40-year-old Hussam Rajabm fled the scene, but he was caught about an hour later on Sunrise Highway near the Meadowbrook Parkway. Rajabm is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury.

The officer was traveling northbound on Bellmore Avenue at the time of the crash and had the right-of-way. Residents in the area say it's a dangerous intersection.
"Bellmore Avenue is a speedway," a Patch reader wrote on the Bellmore Patch Facebook page. "We need more traffic lights to slow the traffic down."
