Spring Break Reads for Kids, Teens and Adults

Librarians share book recommendations in honor of National Library Week.

Spring Break is here and while some people are on vacation, others are curled up with a good book that has taken them around the world in a few hours.

This week, April 8 to April 14, is National Library Week. In honor of it, Patch sat down with Bellmore librarians to find out what books they recommend for children, teens and adults.

Children- Eight and up

1. Good Luck, Ana Hibiscus by Atinuke- Ana, who lives in Africa, can't wait to visit her grandmother in snowy Canada.

2. The Newsy News Letter (Nikki and Deja) by Laura Freeman-The duo decides to create a newspaper at school with their special pen and notepad.

3. EllRay Jakes is a Rockstar by Sally Warner- EllRay feels he needs something to brag about to be popular, but his plan backfires.


Young Adult- 12 and up

1. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson- Lia is haunted by her best friend's death from bulimia, as she struggles with her own eating disorder.

2. Along For the Ride by Sarah Dessen- Auden’s summer becomes one of second chances, not just for her but for her family and friends as well. The more chances she takes, the more she discovers about herself.

3. How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr- Jill MacSweeny just wishes everything could go back to normal. But ever since her dad died, she's been isolating herself from her boyfriend, her best friends--everyone who wants to support her. And when her mom decides to adopt a baby, it feels like she's somehow trying to replace a lost family member with a new one. 

Adults

1. The Lost Wife by Alyson Richman- In pre-war Prague, the dreams of two young lovers are shattered when they are separated by the Nazi invasion. Then, decades later, thousands of miles away in New York, there's an inescapable glance of recognition between two strangers. Providence is giving Lenka and Josef one more chance.

2. Great House by Nicole Krauss- Short stories on loss and recovery.

3. The Red Cardigan by Alice Hoffman- An introduction to the the luminous and haunting world of Blackwell, Mass.
