The transformer atop a utility pole on Bedford Avenue erupted in flames Tuesday afternoon, according to a North Bellmore Fire official.
The pole, located in front of Ralph's Italian Ices, was flaming mineral oil, pouring onto a parked car, according to fire department public information officer Vincent Scaduto.
Volunteer firefights from Bellmore arrived on scene and relocated the vehicle. They also cordoned off the area and were able to keep both Ralph's and neighboring Umberto's Pizza open for business. The fire was extinguished.
Four hours later the same transformer began smoking. The Long Island Power Authority was called to the scene and First Assistant Fire Chief Marsar worked with nearby businesses to maintain limited power while LIPA repaired the pole.
In total, Bedford Avenue was closed to traffic for more than an hour.
