Vandals Destroy Girl Scout Garden

A caterpillar garden, created by a kindergarten Girl Scout Daisy Troop in front of Dinkelmeyer Elementary School, was recently vandalized.

According to Lisa Pantelis, a Daisy leader, the styrofoam caterpillars that were made by the children were ripped out of the ground, taken apart and thrown all over the school grounds. Beer cans were also found around the garden, Pantelis said.

Pantelis said that her girls were very upset about the incident.

"They were mad and asked how someone could do this," she said.

The Daises created the garden during the week of the Girl Scouts' 100th birthday in March in order to receive their Rosie Petal, a badge that honors the act of making the world a better place.

Pantelis said that she and others cleaned up the garden as best they could. On April 26, she and co-leader, Pam Amon, plan to add a trellis and plants to the garden.

"We told these girls that we will add these things before this happened and that is what we are going to do," Pantelis said.
