Brentwood Street Will Be Renamed To Honor Late Humanitarian

William Ayala delivered meals to seniors as a volunteer for 25 years until his death last year from COVID-19.

BRENTWOOD, NY—William Ayala volunteered delivering meals to senior citizens for more than a quarter century. The Town of Islip will remember his life and work by renaming a portion of Third Ave. in Brentwood after the late resident, who died due to to complications from COVID-19 last year.

Ayala was an Air Force veteran, and had retired from a career with the NYC Transit Authority. He helped Adelante of Suffolk County deliver meals to local senior citizens as part of their Senior Nutrition Program.

The ceremony to honor him will take place this Thursday at 2 p.m. at the corner of Third Ave. and Stein Dr. in front of Adelante of Suffolk County.

In June 2020, within one month, Ayala, his wife Zaida Ayala, and Zaida's sister Carmen Ruiz, all contracted COVID-19 and passed away. Ruiz had been living with the couple, a close family unit a relative told Newsday were like "the Three Musketeers."

The Ayalas had six adopted children and six grandchildren.
