Islip Community Mourns The Death Of Beloved Firefighter: FD

The Islip community is mourning the death of a beloved 27-year member of the Islip Fire Department.

ISLIP, NY — The Islip community is mourning the death of a dedicated firefighter and a lifelong member of the Islip Fire Department.

Douglas Aichroth of Bay Shore died on Friday, Oct. 25. He was 74.

Aichroth was a 27-year member of the fire department and a former captain of Fire Police Company No. 1, the department said.

The fire department announced his passing on Friday in a Facebook post, writing:

"It is with deep regret that we announce that 27-year member of the Fire Police Company No. 1 Douglas Aichroth has answered his last alarm. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Aichroth family."

According to his obituary, he was a retired Long Island Rail Road police officer and a "long-time" employee of the Islip Public Library.

He also had a "passion for sharing his love of fresh brown eggs, garden tomatoes, flowers, and honey bees from his property he called Aichroth's Acres."

Aichroth is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Matthew; daughter, Jill; three grandsons; and his sister, Diane.

Visitors will be received on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4:30 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Overton Funeral Home in Islip with Firematic Services at 7:30 p.m.

A closing prayer will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. He will be interred at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
