BRENTWOOD, NY — A Brentwood man was indicted for murder charges on Thursday, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced.

Romero Campbell, aka Romeo, 23, of Brentwood, was indicted for second-degree murder after allegedly killing Brentwood resident Joshua Jasmin, 29, over a verbal dispute in August, the DA said.

According to the investigation, on August 30 around 6 p.m., Campbell and Jasmin were allegedly engaged in a verbal dispute on the front lawn of Campbell's Brentwood home on Charter Oaks Avenue, the DA said.

During the dispute, Campbell allegedly fired two shots from a shotgun and hit Jasmin in the torso causing him to fall to the ground, the DA said.

When Suffolk County Police officers arrived at the scene, they found Jasmin both pulseless and
shirtless, lying partly in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, the DA said.

Jasmin was later pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital, the DA said.

According to the DA, a witness said that Jasmin was unarmed. Officer body camera footage supported the witness’ account that Jasmin was unarmed.

After finding Jasmin's body upon arrival, police then searched the Charter Oaks Avenue property and found a shotgun standing inside a kitchen doorway with a shotgun shell casing lying nearby on the floor, the DA said.

Police observed Campbell standing nearby and after further investigation, identified him as the alleged shooter and took him into custody, the DA said.

Video surveillance obtained from an adjacent property captured the argument and the shooting, the DA said. In addition, the video's sound recorded Jasmin calling the shooter "Rome."

On Thursday, Campbell was arraigned before Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis and indicted for second-degree murder, a Class A felony, the DA said.

Justice Wilutis ordered Campbell to be held in custody, the DA said. He is due back in court on October 16, 2024, and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the top count, the DA said.

“The charges that have been filed detail a tragic and senseless act of violence,” said Tierney. “We will diligently pursue justice for Joshua and his loved ones.”

Campbell is being represented by George Duncan. He was not immediately available for comment.
