'Help Me, Lord!': Gruesome Details Emerge About Day Son Fatally Stabbed Mother On LI: DA
Officers found the mother, 59, dead, with a knife in her back and a pool of blood around her; son spent hours in house with her body: DA
BRENTWOOD, NY — Gruesome details emerged and a Brentwood man was indicted Thursday in connection with fatally stabbing his 59-year-old mother, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said.
Jason Kurumoglu, 30, was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder, Tierney said.
According to the investigation, on September 9, Suffolk County Police received a 911 call reporting that Melida Velasquez had been discovered by her daughter inside the home that they shared on West White Street in Brentwood, prosecutors said.

Officers arrived to find Velasquez deceased, with a knife lodged in her back and a pool of blood surrounding her, Tierney said.
Kurumoglu, who also resided with his mother, reportedly emerged from inside the home and surrendered to police, Tierney said.

The officers observed what appeared to be dried blood on his hands and his shirt, which was later recovered from his room, prosecutors said.
“After allegedly stabbing his mother to death, this defendant callously left her lying where she
died,” Tierney said. “My office will work tirelessly to secure justice for Ms. Velasquez.”
On the day of the murder, Velasquez had been home alone from 6:32 a.m. until 1:23 p.m., when Kurumoglu reportedly returned home from work, Tierney said.
At 1:33 p.m., a downstairs tenant reported hearing a loud thump, followed by the woman screaming, “Help me, Lord!" the DA said.
The tenant also heard a male voice with the woman, Tierney added.
Kurumoglu did not leave the house until after police arrived; by that point, investigators
believe Velasquez had been dead about three hours, the DA's office said.
The judge ordered Kurumoglu remanded without bail during the length of the case.
Kurumoglu is due back in court on October 18 and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the top count, the DA said.
Patch attempted to reach Kurumoglu's attorney Peter Mayer for comment.
