Eastchester's Bash the Trash

Children at Waverly will get an education in environmentalism from the Bash the Trash group during a special performance on Friday. Here are the details from Eastchester Schools' Coordinator for Public Affairs MaryEllen Meehan Byrne.

On March 15th, the group, Bash the Trash Environmental Arts will perform an assembly for the kindergarten and the first grade students at Waverly.  Bash the Trash Environmental Arts combines science, music and environmental awareness through performances, educational programs and social initiatives.  Whether performing with musical instruments built from trash, building artwork from found objects or consulting on environmental arts education, Bash the Trash always focuses on how the arts and sciences work together.

The kindergarten and first grade students at Waverly will see the Bash the Trash introductory show.  This show introduces the basic concepts of sound, vibration and instrument design, while providing a tangible example of the “reuse” portion of the slogan, “Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.”  Bash the Trash builds and performs on instruments made from recycled and reused materials.  Each interactive performance is a journey into sound, science and music.  The students will learn how instruments are made, why they work and how to make their own.  The students will be treated to sounds from instruments such as a straw oboe and a singing bowl!  This show promises to be a wonderful introduction to combining the concepts of music, science and environmental awareness.

All students are encouraged to wear their Waverly t-shirts or a red shirt for the Bash the Trash assembly.
