Quaker Quest Here in Westchester

"Quakers and social action" will be the theme of a special Sunday event at the Scarsdale Friends Meetinghouse. Here are the details.

On Sunday, March 10th at 2:00 p.m., Armour Villa resident Susan Weisfeld, who served as program chair of the Bronxville League of Women Voters for 15 years, will be one of three speakers concerning “Quakers and Social Action,” a free community program at the Scarsdale Friends Meetinghouse at 133 Popham Road, just west of Rte. 22.

The Quaker influence in Westchester has been strong since before the Revolution but, aside from the well-known opposition to war and the image 
on the Quaker Oats box, many County residents have very little knowledge 
about what Quakers believe and why such a small group often has such a strong impact on issues of peace and social justice.

The program on March 10th is the second of a three-part series entitled “Quaker Quest” which explores the personal spiritual journeys of “Friends” and includes informal discussion with audience members. After the presentations, there will be optional opportunity to experience a short Quaker Meeting for Worship -- which is not worship in the traditional sense, but is unprogrammed (without a leader and structure) and mostly silent (until someone might feel an urging to share a message with the group).

On March 17th, Quaker Quest will explore “Quakers and Parenting.” The series, which opens with “Quakers and the Spiritual Path” will repeat the first three Wednesdays in April at 7:00 p.m. Susan Weisfeld will again speak about “Quakers and Social Action” on April 10th.

The terms “thee” and “thou” will not be part of the presentations, but there will be childcare and refreshments will be served beginning one-half hour before the program begins.
