CLINTON HILL, NY—The Institute for Community Living Emerson-Davis Family Residence, located at 161 Emerson Place in Clinton Hill, is getting a 12-story, $1.5 million upgrade to serve even more Brooklyn families.

Councilmember Crystal Hudson, who represents Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights and Prospect Heights, announced the new development project yesterday.

Construction will begin in 2025 and the new building is expected to open in 2028.

Right now, the Emerson-Davis residence has 38 units of supportive housing for adults with mental health challenges who are reunifying with their children or at risk of losing custody. The building was in need of significant repairs.

With the new development, the facility will have 103 units for parents and heads of households.

"The Emerson Davis Family Residence has been a lifeline for many families in our community. By providing stable housing and comprehensive support, this program has kept families together and helped them thrive," Hudson said.

Hudson added that since 2008, 49 families have transitioned out of Emerson-Davis, and 74% of families remain unified, which is more than double the rate otherwise.

That's because of what Emerson-Davis offers to its clients — 24/7 support, case management services, and therapy that promotes independent living skills and tutoring.

The building will also have a children's playroom, a fitness room, classrooms and a teaching kitchen, and apartments that are available to families earning up to 60% of the Area Median Income.

Current Emerson Davis participating families have been relocated to apartments in the community.
