5 Injured As 4-Alarm Fire Rips Through Brooklyn Apartment: FDNY

BROOKLYN, NY — A fire in a Brooklyn apartment building left five people hurt, authorities said.

Officials are still unsure what sparked the early Monday blaze inside 494 Humboldt St., in Williamsburg, FDNY officials said.

Firefighters rushed to the residential building near Richardson and Herbert streets about 2 a.m., authorities said.

Nearly 200 firefighters and EMS personnel rushed to the scene as the fire reached four alarms within an hour, officials said.

Two residents were pulled from the flames and taken to a local hospital with injuries that included facial burns, according to the FDNY.

Three firefighters also suffered minor injuries, officials said.

The American Red Cross said they are assisting two people displaced by the fire.

Early this morning, the FDNY warned of traffic disruptions near Humboldt Street and Meeker Avenue, west of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway overpass.

Fire marshals are investigating the cause, but officials said the older, wood-frame buildings allowed the fire to spread quickly through walls and ceilings.

Two buildings sustained extensive damage and will be evaluated by the Department of Buildings, the FDNY said.
