6 Firefighters Injured Battling Bushwick 5-Alarm Fire: FDNY

Over 255 firefighters and 28 units responded to the scene, FDNY officials said.

BROOKLYN, NY — Six firefighters were injured battling a 5-alarm fire that burned through a Bushwick supermarket and quickly spread to four other buildings on Wednesday, fire officials said.

Firefighters first responded to 1385 Bushwick Ave (Christa’s Kitchen & Market) at about 6 p.m. The fire rapidly escalated to a 5th alarm at about 6:45 p.m.

Over 255 firefighters and 28 units responded to the scene, FDNY officials said.

"This fire impacted this community, not only the supermarket that they use but the residents of this community in four different buildings,” FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeifer said during a press conference Wednesday. “Our hearts go out to those residents.”

The Red Cross also responded to the scene and were assisting residents affected by the fire.

The six firefighters suffered minor injuries. Five of them were transported to area hospitals. One resident also suffered minor injuries, FDNY officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by fire marshals.
