Man Shot And Killed In Christmas Eve Shooting In Brooklyn: NYPD (patch.com) — Residents near Powell Street and Belmont Avenue awoke to a tragic Christmas Eve shooting, as a 46-year-old man was found with a fatal gunshot wound and later died at Brookdale Hospital. With no arrests or suspect description yet, NYPD detectives are asking anyone in Brooklyn who saw or heard anything to contact Crime Stoppers and help move the investigation forward.

Strike Looms As Brooklyn Nurses Authorize Walkout At 5 Hospitals (patch.com) — Brooklyn patients could feel the impact soon as nurses at Maimonides, Interfaith, Kingsbrook Jewish, The Brooklyn Hospital Center and Wyckoff Heights join colleagues citywide in authorizing a possible strike over staffing, safety and contract protections. Union leaders say hospital management is dragging out talks and pushing rollbacks on staffing standards, while nurses insist they want a fair deal that protects care in Brooklyn before year’s end.

Mother-daughter duo forced woman to be prostitute in Brooklyn massage parlors: DA (nydailynews.com) — Brooklyn prosecutors have charged a Brighton Beach mother and daughter with trafficking and coercing women at multiple local massage parlors, including locations on McDonald and Coney Island Avenues. Authorities say the women allegedly forced long hours, took half of workers’ earnings, and used threats to keep them in line. The pair is being held on bail and due back in court in February.

Educators praise school phone ban, as fall semester wraps (brooklyneagle.com) — Brooklyn principals say New York’s new smartphone ban is helping students focus, with leaders in Brighton Beach and Bed-Stuy reporting fewer distractions in their high schools. Some teens agree their grades and social lives improved, while others worry about emergencies and note the rules are easy to dodge. A recent statewide survey found most administrators see calmer, more attentive classrooms.
