BROOKLYN, NY — A 51-year-old Brooklyn man died after suffering a medical episode while driving on the Gowanus Expressway, causing a six-car collision, police said. Dimitri Kontoleon, of Dyker Heights, was driving his Volkswagen SUV west on the expressway at about 3:52 p.m. when he suffered a medical episode, leading him to strike a Ford van which then collided with an Acura sedan, police said. The Volkswagen continued straight and struck a Mercedes SUV, causing the vehicle to crash into a Nissan SUV. Another Nissan SUV was subsequently hit, police said. EMS transported Kontoleon to NYU Langone Medical Hospital/Brooklyn, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. Two other drivers were taken to the hospital in stable condition, police said. An investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad.
