Box Truck Fatally Strikes Cyclist In Brooklyn: NYPD

The cyclist was riding in Prospect Lefferts Gardens when he was knocked off his bike by a box truck making a right turn, police said.

PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS, NY — A box truck fatally struck a cyclist in Prospect Lefferts Gardens Wednesday morning, police said.

Emanuel Patterson, 56, of Brooklyn, was riding westbound on Clarkson Avenue about 10:10 a.m. when a box truck attempted a right turn onto Rogers Avenue and collided with the cyclist, according to the NYPD.

Patterson was left unconscious and severely injured, police said. First responders rushed the gravely wounded man to an area hospital, but he could not be saved, officials said.

Patterson was just a couple blocks from his Brooklyn home, according to police.

The 26-year-old truck driver remained at the scene, but no arrests had been made as of Thursday morning, according to a NYPD spokesperson.

Police said they would continue to investigate the crash.

It's the third injurious crash near the intersection this year, according to NYC Crash Mapper.

So far this year, Prospect Lefferts Gardens has seen over 100 injurious crashes — 25 of which involved cyclists.

Wednesday's is the neighborhood's first fatal crash this year, according to NYC Crash Mapper data.

"Mayor Adams is failing New Yorkers," said Danny Harris, Executive Director of street safety advocacy group Transportation Alternatives.

"More bike riders have been killed in traffic violence at this point in 2023 than any other year under Vision Zero and, yet, this mayor has advanced no concrete actions or plans to stop this preventable violence.”
