Man's Death In Brooklyn Apartment Ruled A Homicide: NYPD (patch.com) — Brooklyn residents are being urged to stay alert after police reclassified the death of 51-year-old Justin Tetro, found with head and neck trauma in his Pennsylvania Avenue apartment, as a homicide. The medical examiner’s ruling has prompted an active NYPD investigation, with no arrests yet announced and few details released about what may have happened inside the East New York building.
   

2. 6 Teens Injured In Shooting Outside Sweet 16 Birthday Party In Brooklyn: NYPD (patch.com) — Neighbors in Cypress Hills are reeling after six teenagers were shot outside a Sweet 16 celebration at a Brooklyn event space on Atlantic Avenue near Ashford Street. All the victims are in stable condition, while NYPD and city leaders vow to track down the two gunmen seen on surveillance video opening fire before fleeing the scene.

Firefighters battle Sunset Park house fire as blocked hydrant, freezing temps hamper efforts • Brooklyn Paper (brooklynpaper.com) — Firefighters rushed to a house fire on 56th Street in Sunset Park Sunday afternoon, battling flames, a blocked hydrant, and freezing temperatures but reporting no injuries. About 60 FDNY members brought the basement blaze under control in roughly 35 minutes, while displaced residents waited outside in the cold with their pets as investigators worked to determine the cause.
   

4. Brooklyn's East New York Gains Affordable Homes (bkreader.com) — Hundreds of new affordable and supportive apartments are now open at the Alafia Phase 1 development on the former Brooklyn Developmental Center site in East New York, bringing 576 income-restricted homes to central Brooklyn. The all-electric complex adds a One Brooklyn Health clinic, supportive housing for residents with disabilities, and new retail including a supermarket, all under the state’s Vital Brooklyn Initiative.
   

5. Former congressmember and Brooklyn political icon Ed Towns receives key to the city of New York (brooklyneagle.com) — Longtime Brooklyn congressmember Ed Towns, who represented neighborhoods like Bedford-Stuyvesant and East New York, has been honored with the Key to the City by Mayor Eric Adams. Now 91, Towns reflects on Brooklyn’s importance in his life and continues advising, writing a second book, and championing the community he says has been “extremely good” to him.
