Boy, 13, Arrested For Gender-Based Hate Crime In Brooklyn: NYPD

BROOKLYN, NY — A 13-year-old boy has been arrested for attacking a non-gender conforming individual in Williamsburg last week, an incident deemed as a hate crime, police announced Thursday.

The boy was charged with hate crime assault, hate crime aggravated harassment and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.

On May 13, at 5 p.m., the 33-year-old victim was sitting on the front steps of their home near Boerum Street and Bushwick Avenue when they were approached by two unidentified men, police said.

The two men apparently asked if the victim was a woman and proceeded to make other remarks, leading to a verbal dispute, police said.

The duo then picked a metal pipe and struck the 33-year-old victim in the head before fleeing the scene, police said.

The victim suffered bruising to the head but refused medical attention at the scene.

It is not immediately known if the second suspect has been apprehended as of Thursday afternoon.
