Brighton Beach Student Brought BB Gun, Knife To School, Cops Say

The unnamed student was arrested Thursday at the Rachel Carson School for Coastal Studies.

BRIGHTON BEACH, NY — A student was arrested Thursday morning after he brought a BB gun and knife to school, the NYPD said. Police found the weapons on the student after responding to a 10:55 a.m. call reporting a gun at the Rachel Carson High School for Coastal Studies, police said.

Police removed the student from the school at 521 West Ave. and took him to the 60th Precinct in Coney Island, where he's being held on pending charges, the NYPD said.

The school was on a temporary lockdown, a spokeswoman for the city Department of Education said. The Police Department did not release the student's name or age.

"Safety is our top priority and the NYPD swiftly and safely recovered the BB gun," the spokeswoman, Miranda Barbot, said in a statement. "Students and staff are safe and the temporary lockdown has been lifted."

The Rachel Carson High School shares its Brighton Beach building with I.S. 303, a middle school, and the Coney Island Prep charter school.

It's unknown how school personnel discovered the weapon or whether the school has metal detectors, police said.

Police are still investigating the incident.
