Brooklyn Author Paul Auster Dies At 77: Reports

The author of "The New York Trilogy," had lived in Park Slope since 1980.

BROOKLYN, NY — Author Paul Auster, widely known for his books "The New York Trilogy," "Sunset Park”, “4 3 2 1,” and "The Book of Illusions”, has died at age 77, The New York Times reported.

Auster’s death was confirmed by fellow author Jacki Lyden. The 77-year-old author died of complications from lung cancer at his home in Brooklyn on Tuesday, according to The Times and other media outlets.

Auster’s wife, Siri Hustvedt, revealed in an Instagram post last year that he had been diagnosed in December 2022 and noted he was receiving treatment.

Auster, born in Newark, New Jersey in 1947, later moved to Park Slope in 1980 where he wrote many of his best-selling novels, The Times reported

The 77-year-old Auster also wrote a number of screenplays, including “Smoke”, “Blue in the Face,” “Lulu on the Bridge” and “The Inner Life of Martin Frost”, according to the report.

In a post on X (formerly Twiiter), The Booker Prizes wrote “We are very sad to hear of the death of Booker Prize shortlistee Paul Auster, whose work touched readers and influenced writers all over the world, and whose generosity was felt in just as many quarters. We extend our condolences to his wife Siri Hustvedt and his family.”
