Partial G Train Closure Starts Soon — Here’s What You Need To Know
New York commuters who rely on the G train will face service changes between Queens and Brooklyn this summer.

BROOKLYN, NY — Calling all Brooklyn straphangers — service changes are coming to the G train this summer, and they could impact your daily commute.
A recent update from the MTA outlines plans for a partial G train shutdown starting in July. Service will be suspended between Court Square in Queens and Bedford-Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn on select nights and weekends.
During the disruption, fare-free shuttle buses will operate between the affected stations, officials said.

The work is scheduled to begin on July 14 and continue through August 18, during which MTA crews will focus on signal modernization. The G train’s current signal system, which dates back to the 1930s, is being upgraded to state-of-the-art Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) — a technology designed to improve reliability and efficiency for the 160,000 daily riders.
Once the $368 million project is complete, the G line will become the third subway line in the system fully converted to CBTC, following the L and 7 trains.

Work on the signal modernization project will continue until the third quarter of 2027, MTA officials said, Since the 2024 G train shutdown, the MTA has carried out three separate full-line closures, totaling nine and a half weeks, to perform important signal upgrades and essential repairs.
During that time, the project team successfully installed modern signal equipment along the entire G line and completed key work, including the reconstruction of the Court Square interlocking and roughly 30 miles of track.
Riders have also benefited from the introduction of new R211 trains, which began rolling out in March. These new train cars, including the R211T open-gangway models, offer improved reliability and comfort, and are designed to work seamlessly with the upgraded CBTC signaling system.
