Man Killed In BK Police Involved Shooting Identified
Andre Mayfield, of East New York, had approached a marked NYPD squad car in Bushwick and displayed two knives to police officers Sunday.

BROOKLYN, NY — A 26-year-old man who was killed after he apparently charged at two police officers with a knife in Brooklyn last Sunday has been identified, officials said.
Andre Mayfield, of East New York, had approached a marked NYPD squad car on Eldert Street in Bushwick and tapped the window — displaying two knives to two police officers sitting inside, NYPD officials said during a press conference Sunday.
The officers had just finished responding to a domestic violence call at about 2:30 a.m., NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said.

The two officers got out of their vehicle to try to verbally deescalate the situation, but when that did not work, they deployed their tasers, police said.
The tasers initially worked with Mayfield dropping one of his knives, but he was able to get up with the second knife still in his hands, police said.

"He did not listen to their warnings and charged toward the officers," Chell said.
The officers then fired their guns and shot Mayfield, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said.
"We try everything we can with emotionally disturbed people to deescalate, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way for us. Very tough night for these two officers and for the family of the [emotionally disturbed person]," Chell said.
The family of Mayfield has called the police response "excessive,"according to a New York Daily News report.
