Brooklyn Is Getting A New Electric Vehicle Charging Lot
Construction will start in September and will last until January.
BROOKLYN, NY — Brooklyn will get a fast new electric vehicle charging station at the Bensonhurst Municipal Field this January, New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said.
Construction on the site at 1763 86th Street will start in September.
The site will have four fast chargers , which will provide an 80 percent charge in 20 minutes to one hour, and four Level 2 chargers, which can provide most electric vehicles with a full charge in six to eight hours.

Rodriguez said that the DOT is targeting Southern Brooklyn because it is an area where drivers licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission are highly concentrated.
“As a former cab driver, I understand how important equity of access will be to our efforts to transition for-hire vehicles away from fossil fuels,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

As of July 2024, 62,192 electric vehicles are now registered in NYC, according to the DOT.
Though the charging lot is part of NYC Mayor Eric Adams' targeted plan to make all shared rides electric by 2030, the new chargers will also be open to the public, the DOT said.
