BROOKLYN, NY — A Gowanus elementary school is set to receive a new ventilation system to contain the toxic chemicals found in the air of its basement by early next year, Brooklyn Paper reported.

Last March, state investigators found petroleum contamination and benzene, a known carcinogen, in PS 372's basement air. However, the school reopened at the beginning of the school year because the contamination was “slightly above” normal levels and did not pose a significant risk, the investigators told Gothamist.

The new ventilation system passed its first round of testing but still needs to be approved and installed, which could take until after Christmas, Brooklyn Paper reported.
