8-Year-Old Pepper Sprays 19 Classmates At Brooklyn School: NYPD

The student fired the pepper spray inside a P.S. 184 classroom on Tuesday morning, police said.

BROWNSVILLE, NY — An 8-year-old released pepper spray inside a Brownsville classroom on Tuesday morning, causing 19 classmates and one teacher to be hurt, police said.

Police responded to P.S. 184, at 273 Newport St., after several students complained they had difficulty breathing inside the school, a spokesman for the NYPD said. Officers found that the 8-year-old released pepper spray in a classroom.

The incident hurt 20 people inside the building and 11 students were taken to Brookdale Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. One teacher and eight students were treated on the scene.

"EMS immediately responded to an incident at PS 184 in Brooklyn," said Miranda Barbot, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, in a statement. "Students and staff are safe, and out of an abundance of caution individuals were transported to the hospital for observation."
