'Brownsville Bred' Film To Be Featured At SXSW Festival

The film, which takes place in the Brooklyn neighborhood, is based on a one-woman show and young adult novel by director Elaine Del Valle.

BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN — A film straight out of Brownsville will celebrate its world premiere at the SXSW festival next month.

"Brownsville Bred," based on a one-woman show and young adult novel, tells director Elaine Del Valle's personal story of a young woman growing up in the Brooklyn neighborhood in the 1980s, according to a summary and a profile in BELatina News.

“It has been my long-time dream to realize Brownsville Bred onto the screen,” Del Valle told the outlet. “With a trail of award-winning short films that I have directed over the last few years, I find myself ready to tell this, my most intimate story.”

The film tells the tale of Elaine, an eight year old who lives with her mom, dad and three-half siblings in the projects of Brownsville as one of the only Puerto Rican families in the neighborhood, according to its synopsis.

"Through Elaine’s young eyes, life is perfect. But everything comes crashing down when she discovers a tragic truth that will affect her life forever," the summary reads.

At SXSW, the film will be shown on March 13, 14 and 17, according to the schedule. The March 14 show will be online only.

The version of "Brownsville Bred" that will be shown at the festival is part one of the film, according to its website. "Act two" is slated to start production in April.

"Brownsville Bred reveals the real pitfalls of generational poverty and struggles to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. I aim to shine a light into a portal that leads to empathy and human connection because I believe that promise, laughter, and love live everywhere and in everyone," she says on the film's website. " Del Valle wrote on the website. "...While Brownsville Bred is based on my true story, it is much bigger than me."
