Democrat Chandler-Waterman Holds Strong Lead In BK Assembly Race
Neighbors in the 58th Assembly District — which includes East Flatbush, Canarsie and southern Brownsville— cast their votes on Tuesday.

BROOKLYN, NY — Democratic nominee Monique Chandler-Waterman held a strong lead as votes rolled in Tuesday in Brooklyn's 58th Assembly District.
Residents of the 58th District — which covers Canarsie, Brownsville and East Flatbush — voted Tuesday for the replacement of former Assemblymember N. Nick Perry, who resigned to serve as U.S. ambassador to Jamaica.
About an hour after polls closed at 9 p.m., Chandler-Waterman held nearly 80 percent of the votes with nearly all precincts reporting, according to the Board of Elections. The results will not be official until they are certified by the BOE.

Chandler-Waterman's opponent Hercules Reid, who ran as an independent, held 18 percent of the vote. Republican candidate Monique Allen-Davy gained just 2.3 percent, the unofficial results show.
The winner of Tuesday's election will complete Perry's term through the end of the year and compete in the upcoming primary election to hold the seat for a full term.

The election is the second held in eastern Brooklyn to fill a vacant seat this year.

Monique Allen-Davy
Party: Conservative/Republican
Background: Allen-Davy is a school counselor who previously worked as a director of human resources specializing in labor relations, employment law and government contracting for more than ten years, according to her Facebook page.

Monique Chandler-Waterman
Party: Democratic/Working Families Party
Background: A self-described activist and organizer, Chandler-Waterman is co-founder of the nonprofit East Flatbush Village Inc. She has also been a "driving force" behind several block associations, according to her website. The Democratic nominee's campaign has received endorsements from former Assemblymember N. Nick Perry, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, according to reports.

Hercules Reid
Party: Independent
Background: Reid is an organizer for Strategy for Black Lives and a former aide to Mayor Eric Adams when he was in the borough president's office. He has received the endorsement of the now-mayor and has a background organizing for CUNY students while in school.
