In Bushwick, One Court Officer Dead, Another Wounded in Apparent Murder-Suicide: NYPD

The deceased officer was an employee of the Nassau Family Court, authorities said. His girlfriend worked at family court in Brooklyn.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN, NY — A Kings County Family Court officer was shot and critically wounded Thursday by her boyfriend, a family court officer in Nassau County, who then took his own life, authorities said.

At about 10 p.m. on Thursday night, the NYPD responded to a report of gunfire inside a Bushwick apartment, police said.

Responding officers found a 35-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man. Both had been shot in the head, police said. A revolver was found near the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The woman was transported to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was listed in critical but stable condition as of Friday morning.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, but an NYPD spokeswoman said the man's wound appeared to be self-inflicted. The spokeswoman also said the man and woman were dating.

The names of the individuals had not been released as of Friday, but a spokesman for the New York State Court System confirmed that the man was a family court officer there. The woman was a court officer at Kings County Family Court, according to the spokesman.

Bushwick is patrolled by the NYPD's 83rd Precinct. According to official police statistics, through June 26, major crimes in the 83rd were collectively down about 7 percent compared to the same period last year. Two murders had been reported to police during both periods.
