📰 News we're reading

1. Massive care crash rescue operation in Carmel (midhudsonnews.com) — Emergency crews from across eastern Putnam responded to a serious rollover crash Tuesday off Stoneleigh Avenue in Carmel, near Putnam Hospital Center, rescuing an unconscious driver pinned in a car down a steep embankment. The patient was transported to Danbury Hospital, Stoneleigh Avenue was closed for over an hour, and Carmel’s assistant fire chief praised the coordinated technical rescue effort.

2. William Amirante, 64 (putnamcountycourier.com) — Longtime Carmel resident and 1979 Carmel High School graduate William “Billy” Amirante has died at age 64, remembered for his big laugh, love of New York sports, and devotion to family and friends. His family will announce a future celebration of life, and they suggest donations to Carmel Rams Youth Sports or sharing a meal in his honor.

3. First responders say ‘stay off the ice' (midhudsonnews.com) — Officials in Carmel and nearby Kent are warning residents to stay off newly formed ice despite the recent deep freeze, after police encountered an angler on a local lake. State environmental leaders stress that at least four inches of solid, clear ice and frequent thickness checks are essential before anyone ventures out to fish or play on frozen water.

4. Putnam ranked first in flu cases statewide (midhudsonnews.com) — Putnam County, based in Carmel, currently has the highest flu rate in New York State, with cases especially high among school-aged children and older adults. Local health officials urge residents to stay home when sick, watch infants and seniors closely for symptoms, and take advantage of free or low-cost flu vaccines available through the county health department and area providers.
