Air Conditioner Falls 6 Stories, Takes Out Brooklyn Construction Worker

At the East Red Hook Houses.

An air conditioner that dislodged from a window in the East Red Hook Houses fell six stories on Friday morning, smashing into a construction worker’s shoulder.

The worker was standing on a sidewalk shed that reached up to the building’s second story. He’s now recovering at Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park.

“This morning during a standard removal, a window air-conditioner fell from an apartment at the Red Hook East Houses onto a worker below,” says a spokesperson for the NYC Housing Authority, which runs the housing complex.

The worker was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is “believed” to be in non-critical condition, according to NYCHA.

“Thank God he’s alive,” one of the man’s co-workers tell the New York Daily News. “That’s the important thing.”

The person removing the air conditioner was also contracted out by NYCHA.

The NYCHA spokesperson says in a statement:

As we review this unfortunate incident, we continue to work to ensure safe practices at public housing buildings for the overall safety of both our residents and staff.
