PS 29 Parents Protest Asbestos, Construction Pushed Back to Friday

The group still wants SCA to wait until classes have ended.

A protest rally was held at Monday evening by and concerned citizens in opposition to the asbestos abatement that had been scheduled to take place there that night. Construction has since been postponed until Friday, April 27, though the group is asking for the SCA to wait 60 days until class has ended.

, April 20, which violates state laws mandating at least seven days notice of asbestos treatment. The group quickly filed a petition, with many parents threatening to remove their children from the school during the abatement.

“We are so upset; no one has given us any details about how long this will go on,” Julian Stysis, 34, a Cobble Hill resident whose 9-year-old child is a 4th grader at the Henry St. school told The New York Daily News.

The protestors Monday night were joined by , who sent a letter to Lorraine Grillo, School Construction Authority's President and Chief Executive Officer, in support of the stop-work order requested by the PS 29 community. 

“You don’t have to be a scientist to know asbestos is toxic,” Councilmember Lander told the Daily News. “Parents don’t have any assurances their kids will be safe.”

A previously schedule PTA meeting is planned for this Thursday, April 26. Representatives of the SCA have promised to attend, reported Katia Kelly on Pardon Me For Asking. More photos of the rally are available at PMFA.
