WATCH: Emma Straub Takes Viewers Through 'Books Are Magic' Opening In Mini-Doc

The new neighborhood book store opened in early May.

COBBLE HILL, BROOKLYN — "Books Are Magic," the new independent book store from author Emma Straub, has had no trouble generating publicity since the store was announced in December.

Books Are Magic opened May 1, on the corner of Smith Street and Butler Street, to much fanfare, including a glowing profile on CNN's website.

The book store was created in the wake of the closings of Community Bookstore and BookCourt, two Cobble Hill institutions.

Now, a video production site run by Penguin-Random House has released a five-minute mini-documentary that takes viewers through the opening of the book store.

In it, Straub is seen nervously putting the final preparations together for the store's opening and later welcoming in visitors, who describe what books mean to them.

"Book Court was our local independent book store here in Cobble Hill for 35 years," Straub says in the video. "So I knew when they announced that they were closed that everyone was going to be as heartbroken as I was. We very much hope that Books are Magic will have the same feeling as Book Court.

"I want it to be friendly and welcoming and," she adds, tearing up, "necessary."
