Bellport Brewing Co. Owner Mourned: 'He Will Be Forever Missed'

Brian Baker died in a tragic crash on Tuesday and the community is mourning his unthinkable loss. "He made an indelible mark."

MORICHES, NY — Heartbroken friends, family and the community that loved him are mourning the unthinkable loss of Brian Baker, 43. Baker, who lived in Moriches and was the owner of the Bellport Brewing Company, died in a crash on Tuesday in Mastic Beach.

His obituary reflects the love he inspired in so many: "Baker, born on April 3, 1980, was a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend, who passed away on May 9, 2023, at the age of 43 in Mastic Beach.

"Brian is survived by his loving wife Danielle Baker, daughters Katie Baker and Breanna Baker along with his brother Matthew Baker and mother Cheryl Baker. He was preceded in passing by his father Michael Baker and father-in-law Kenneth Spegele. He will forever be missed by those who knew him well, including friends and extended family members," the obituary read.

"Born on April 3, 1980 in Canoga, California to Michael Baker and Cheryl Baker, Brian had a passion for beer and was the owner of Bellport Brewing Company, where he put his heart into his life's work. His love for beer was infectious, and he inspired many with his dedication to the craft."

The family will receive visitors on Monday, May 15 at Mangano Family Funeral Home of Middle Island, located at 640 Middle Country Rd. in Middle Island. Visitation hours are scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by another session from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. that day.

A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, May 16 at Mangano Family Funeral Home of Middle Island starting at 11 a.m. Close friends and family members will gather together to share memories of Brian's life. The ceremony will conclude at noon.

"Brian touched so many lives with his passion for brewing beer. His friendly demeanor and willingness to share his knowledge brought joy to many people. It's safe to say that Brian made an indelible mark on the community he lived in," his obituary read. "He may no longer be with us, but the love he shared with those around him will continue to live on in their memories."

A heartbroken community reflected on the loss on social media.

"We are heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of Bellport Brewing Company founder and owner Brian Baker, who died in a car accident on May 9," Last Chance Animal Rescue wrote. "Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Brian knew he was one of the nicest people you would ever meet, and he had a huge love of animals. Brian made sure that patrons could enjoy a beer with their best bud, as dogs are always welcome."

The group added: "Brian always looked for a way to provide more support to the local community. Last Chance Animal Rescue was grateful for his help and partnership."

The brewery hosted a number of adoption events and even a puppy yoga class, all geared toward supporting the group's rescue mission and helping to find pets great homes, they said.

"Our sincerest condolences to Brian's family and friends as they cope with such a tremendous loss. Keeping you all in our hearts and prayers," the rescue organization said. "Brian, you will certainly be missed. May your memory live on in the hearts of all who loved you."

And, said Jennifer Harrison: "I cannot even believe this. Brian Baker was one of the best. My heart is so broken for his wife and daughters."

Added friend Mike Keegan, a comedian who said he has done several comedy shows at the brewery: "It's such a big loss for Long Island. Between comedy and music, he did so much to support the local arts . . . Brian was one of the good ones."
