Man Charged With DWI After Eastport Crash: Police

He tried to flee but was soon apprehended, police said.

EASTPORT, NY — An Eastport man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a crash Thursday night, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the single-vehicle crash took place at 10:09 p.m. on Montauk Highway at South Bay Avenue in Eastport. Ismael Garcia Chitay, 30, was heading east in a 2005 Honda CR-V when he careened off the roadway and collided with a utility pole, police said.

Garcia Chitay fled on foot before police arrived, but was soon located nearby, police said.

Garcia Chitay was arrested at the scene and then transported to Southampton Town police headquarters for processing; he was charged with misdemeanor DWI and several vehicle and traffic law violations, police said.

He was held overnight for morning arraignment at Southampton Town Justice Court, police said.
