Central Park Cartier Bracelet Victim Admits Story Was Made Up

The NYPD is now charging a 26-year-old who said he had three expensive Cartier bracelets stolen.

One day after the NYPD said they were looking for three teenagers who robbed a pair in Central Park of three expensive Cartier bracelets, it comes out the man made the whole thing up.

Police said Eric Danko, 26, was charged with filing a false report Thursday.

Danko reported the robbery happened just before midnight on Wednesday night in the park, near West 70th Street and The Lake in Central Park.

He said three teenage males approached he and a friend and demanded their backpack, police said. Danko said he surrendered his backpack, and the three teenagers fled. They did not show a weapon, police said.

Danko told police there were Cartier bracelets inside, as well as an iPhone and other electronics. The New York Daily News reports there were three bracelets worth $8,000 each.

The Daily News reports the other items in the backpack included a Bose speaker and $400 in cash.

Crime in Central Park is down nearly 40 percent year-to-date in 2016 versus last year, but there had been four robberies in the park through July 3 this year. That's a 57 percent decline year-to-date from 2015.
