Bedford Resident Brings Jewelry Expertise to Youth Design Studio
Depending on the occasion—because it's by-appointment, young ladies are there for drop-in sessions, reservations with a friend, or parties—the staff may even roll out a red carpet.
Bedford resident Lindsay Cain has been in the jewelry business for years—first as a designer, and later as a retailer who gave her customers the opportunity to create their own pieces.
That's what clients do at her Greenwich, CT shop, and, for the last few months, at Sparklers, a jewelry design studio for young ladies. Located in Scotts Corners, the store was born out of "incessant" requests from shoppers who hoped to host a daughter's birthday party at Femmegems—a space that is less than ideal for children's gatherings.
"I couldn't get it out of my head that no one in this family-focused area that we live in, Fairfield County and Westchester County, no one had really done a kids jewelry designing studio the way I thought it should be done," she said.

So after a year of testing the business in the back room of a storefront in Connecticut, Cain found a different location and made her expansion permanent.
Keeping in line with the "sophisticated level" of jewelry design she offers her adult customers, the spinoff shop is a pink-and-gray space, with bursts of blues, yellows and other colors. Creators select their gems from a long table topped with trays of beads.

Depending on the occasion—because it's by-appointment, young ladies are there for drop-in sessions, reservations with a friend, or parties—the staff may roll out a red carpet. After clasps have been attached and the pieces are finished, the girls model their pieces. They may enjoy cupcakes and lemonade, or "mini-pedicures" could take place in a cozy corner of the studio. Several more "add-on" options are available.
Feedback from the community has been reminiscent of the way the design-your-own-jewelry idea was "sort of off and running instantly" when it launched years ago. The business, which is appropriate for children ages 5 to 12, opened in February.
"The reaction has been great," Cain, whose son is 5-and-a-half, said. "...They love the process."
Editor's note: Sparklers is located at 40 Westchester Avenue, Pound Ridge. This is the first of three posts focused on businesses that serve the youngsters in the Bedford-Katonah area.
