'Glimpses of New Castle’s Past' At The New Castle Historical Society
Pictures by local artists offer a window into the past and allow us to see how the present is colored by what came before.

CHAPPAQUA, NY — Taking a look back at the past is all the more exciting when an artist's unique perspective reveals itself in the process.
The New Castle Historical Society (NCHS) announced that its upcoming exhibit, "Glimpses of New Castle's Past: Pictures by Local Artists," will be held from April 20 to July 20.
The organizers say that a wide range of subjects and styles will be on view in the display of pictures by twentieth-century artists portraying landmarks and other scenes in the New Castle community. The artworks come from the NCHS' own extensive collection, along with several on loan from the Chappaqua Library.

The show will feature two artists in particular: James Renwick Thomson and W. Stuart Archibald.
Thomson was an architect who designed what is now the Robert E. Bell School and many area homes. He was also known as a talented artist "whose mastery of the transparent watercolor technique gave his works an atmosphere of airy spaciousness."

Archibald, on the other hand, used "more opaque colors to create a painterly series of building portraits."
Favorite subjects of several artists include the former Sutton Farm, the Quaker Meetinghouse, and the Memorial Day parade. Louis Raymond captured the spirit of local events such as the very first Community Day and the Garden Club flower show.
The historical society says that one of the most dramatic works in the show is an aerial view of Chappaqua in winter by illustrator Kenneth Fagg.
NCHS invites all to enjoy the display of New Castle scenes by New Castle artists and combine the visit with a tour of the historic summer home of New Castle’s most celebrated citizen, Horace Greeley.
The New Castle Historical Society is located at 100 King Street, in Chappaqua. Find out more on their website.
