Hillary Clinton Gets Warm Welcome At Chappaqua Memorial Day Parade

More than six months after losing her presidential bid, Hillary Clinton remains beloved in her hometown.

CHAPPAQUA, NY — More than six months after losing her bid for the presidency to Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton remains popular in her hometown of Chappaqua. The support was visible on a rainy Monday afternoon, when the former secretary of state was greeted with cheers as she marched in her local Memorial Day parade. Clinton, who is also a former senator and first lady, was joined by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and members of the New Castle Town Board.

Chappaqua is an unincorporated hamlet within the Town of New Castle, which holds the parade every year. Cuomo lives in the northern section of the town, which is outside of Chappaqua.

The town's status as a remaining Clinton bastion is no surprise. In November, Clinton carried New Castle by a blow-out margin over Trump; results from the Westchester County Board of Elections show that she won with 7,384 votes to her opponent's 2,080.

While Clinton's participation has typically not been announced in advance, she has marched in the parade for years, including during her tenure as secretary of state and as a presidential candidate.

Several members of the press were on hand to cover Clinton. Asked by a reporter about why she participates in the parade, Clinton noted the importance of honoring soldiers who have served and her support for her community.

“Well, I do it every year because I think it’s important to honor everyone who sacrificed their lives in pursuit of our rights, our values, our freedom, and it’s here in our hometown and I love seeing everybody and having a chance to, you know, just show our support, our support for our military — past, present and future — and our support for where we live,” Clinton said.

Marchers lined up at the entrance to the Ridgewood Terrace neighborhood before stepping off onto Route 117. From there, marchers continued north before turning left to go down hill on Route 120. Marchers proceeded down the hill and through Chappaqua's business district before concluding in front of the local war memorial, which is adjacent to the community's train station. A ceremony was subsequently held to pay respect to the fallen.

Reminders of Clinton's locally popularity were visible during the parade, either with signage or with shouts.

“Hillary, we love you!” a woman proudly shouted.

“I’m still with you!” another woman yelled.

After the parade ended, Clinton posed with supporters, one of whom held a blue sign with white type that thanked her for her years of public service.
