March Events Offered by NWH & the Center for Healthy Living

Cooking to reduce colorectal cancer risk among virtual events offered by Northern Westchester Hospital and the Center for Healthy Living

Cooking strategies to reduce the risk of colorectal cancers, and a conversation with experts on how families can foster positive food relationships and behaviors are featured programs offered in March by Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) and the Center for Healthy Living. Other virtual events to help people feel better and get healthier include chair yoga, smoking cessation, and a course on the practice of progressive muscle relaxation as a beneficial strategy to ease tension.

Located next to the Whole Foods Market at Chappaqua Crossing, the Center for Healthy Living supports health and wellness through education, health resources, diverse programing and referrals. Virtual Grandparenting 101 Class

Cost: Free

Breastfeeding Nook

Monday, March 7, 1 – 3 pm, live over Microsoft Teams

Cost: Free

Join with your baby to meet other breastfeeding mothers and receive peer-to-peer support to help you achieve your breastfeeding goals. Information, encouragement, and support are provided by a Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Please note, this support group is for mothers who have already delivered.

Chair Yoga

Mondays & Thursdays, March 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, and 31, 11 am – noon, live over Zoom

Cost: Free

Chair Yoga is one of the gentlest forms of yoga available, adapting poses through the creative use of a chair. Emphasis will be on breathing, balance, and taking things at your own pace. This workshop is led by Toni Russo, MS, RN AHN-BC, RYT-220, a leader on NWH’s Integrative Medicine Team.

Virtual Newborn Care Class

Learn tips for newborn bathing, diapering, cord care, sleep, feeding patterns, and more! A pediatrician joins for a Q&A at the end to address common concerns of new parents.

Virtual Breastfeeding Class

Monday, March 14, 6 – 8 pm, live over Microsoft Teams

Cost: $30 per person

This comprehensive class is taught exclusively by our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). Whether you have already decided to breastfeed or you are thinking about it, this class is for you. Couples are encouraged to come together. Only one payment per couple.

Cooking for Reducing Disease Risk: Colorectal Cancers

Wednesday, March 16, noon – 1 pm, live over Zoom

Cost: Free

Join registered dietitian Amy Rosenfeld for an informative lecture and demonstration about cooking to reduce your risk for colorectal cancers, in honor of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month. Amy will be joined by fellow registered dietitian, Jacqueline Horne, to discuss foods choices best associated with reduced colorectal cancer risk and realistic cooking methods to make these choices part of your everyday routine. Healthy recipes will be demonstrated. Recipes will be provided ahead of time so you may cook along.

Calming Tension

Wednesday, March 23, noon – 1 pm, live over Zoom

Cost: Free

Using the tensing and releasing of our muscles through the practice of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) can be a beneficial, soothing, and accessible practice to seek calm. Join Rachel Merchan, LCSW, to practice this welcoming and calming relaxation strategy and explore the benefits of utilizing muscle tension and release to enhance mood and well-being. Rachel will highlight the importance of using these practices as part of a routine relaxation strategy.

Virtual Childbirth Preparation Class

Saturday, March 26, 10 am – 2 pm, live over Microsoft Teams

Cost: $100 per couple

This class prepares expectant mothers and her support person for the birthing experience, and is recommended to be taken four to six weeks prior to the estimated delivery date.

Beyond the Dinner Table: Supporting Positive Nutrition Habits as a Family

Tuesday, March 29, noon – 1 pm, live over Zoom

Cost: Free

In honor of National Nutrition Month, join us for a conversation about how your family can foster positive food relationships and behaviors. Experts from Northwell Health will discuss modeling healthy food behaviors, reframing "diet talk," how to talk about weight, and ways to encourage healthy food choices in a positive way. A healthy family-friendly recipe will also be demonstrated. Recipes will be provided.

Virtual Infant/Child Safety Class

Tuesday, March 29, 6 – 8 pm, live over Microsoft Teams
