The only thing worse than eating your way through that leftover Halloween candy would be letting it go to waste, but there's another option.

MOUNT KISCO, NY — There's an untapped ally in the age-old contest between leftover Halloween candy and willpower. While some of us are doomed to eternally lose the battle, others have found a way to turn the tide and help support our troops at the same time.

A team from ProHEALTH Dental in Mount Kisco dropped off more than 75 pounds of donated Halloween candy to United for the Troops in Carmel on Friday. The candy was donated from their dental patients across the tri-state region, and then assembled into approximately 125 sandwich-sized bags filled with tasty treats that will be included in care packages sent to deployed service members.

"Each year after Halloween, people wonder what to do with all that leftover Halloween candy that’s just sitting there in their house tempting them," said Judy Levin, Marketing Director at ProHEALTH Dental. "The team at ProHEALTH Dental partnered with a wonderful nonprofit organization to help send the donated treats to troops overseas, while at the same time ensuring that our patients' teeth and overall health remain intact through moderation."

Levin added that the company hopes to make this an annual donation program that will expand in the future.

"Our sole purpose at United for the Troops is to make life a little better while deployed for our brave men and women serving in the US military by collecting food, toiletries and other goods that the military does not necessarily provide to them," said Jim Rathschmidt, Co-Founder of United for the Troops. "Through speaking with the troops, even though the military provides them with the essentials for day to day life, many of them miss the extra amenities that they receive while at home. Our goal is to show them that we are proud of them and appreciate all of their efforts while they're deployed. Since 2007, we have distributed more than 28,000 care packages to our troops."
