Pink Faces Popping Up Around Bedford

The trees are watching you.

At least, that's what it can feel like when you're driving around Bedford.

We spotted a pair of pink smiling faces looking out from two trees on different stretches of the state scenic road. They are apparently painted on a round slab of wood and nailed to the trees.

One is at the entrance to the Hunting Ridge mall shopping plaza in Bedford Village, looking west on Route 22, and the other can be spotted  on the east side of Route 121, facing drivers headed north (just south of the Bedford Post).

So far, Bedford town officials don't have an issue with them.

"The town could use a spot of color right about now," said Bill O'Keefe, the town's code enforcement officer, about the hot pink spots against the drab gray of winter.

"I don't see a problem with two of them—but if they start multiplying, we might have to bring it to the attention of the police department."

The whimsical plaques have been spotted in Greenwich, too—but so far, the mystery artist has not stepped forward.

While some may see it as a fun piece of art, others, not so much. It's not a good practice to be nailing into trees, says Mike Serio, chairman of Bedford's Tree Advisory Board.
