Chelsea Boozy Brunch Spot Slapped With $10K Fine: Report

Il Bastardo was hit with a $10,000 fine after repeated complaints of rowdy boozy brunches at the establishment.

CHELSEA, NY — A Chelsea brunch spot that's become infamous for its patrons' rowdy behavior has been slapped with a $10,000 fine from state authorities, Chelsea Now reported.

Il Bastardo, located at 191 Seventh Ave., has to fork over $10,000 to the New York State Liquor Authority, the agency decided last month. The fine will settle some of the violations against the Chelsea restaurant, but it still faces at least four pending cases. The fine came with new rules that brunch spot refrain from playing any music during brunch hours, according to Chelsea Now.

An SLA spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for more information from Patch. Il Bastardo did not immediately respond to an email from Patch seeking comment. Thomas McCallen, who represented the restaurant last month in a hearing before the SLA, told Patch he was no longer representing the restaurant. Last month, during a hearing before the state agency, McCallen said that Il Bastardo's owner had worked to address concerns.

"There was a bacchanal feel to the brunches, and he has eliminated this" McCallen said at the time.

Chelsea residents have repeatedly complained of Il Bastardo patrons vomiting and urinating near the intersection of Seventh Avenue and 21st Street, among other displays of public drunkenness. Locals have been asking the mimosa-fueled eatery to tone it down for a while. Last year, the State Liquor Authority fined the restaurant $2,500, some months after Manhattan Community Board 4 wrote the restaurant's owner a stern letter asking the establishment to make some changes. The community board, however, has no punitive authority over the restaurant, and can only recommend changes.
