Greenwich Village Fire Kills 79-Year-Old Man, FDNY Says

A fire in a 13-story building on W. 12th Street killed a 79-year-old man early Friday morning, authorities said.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — A 79-year-old man was killed in a fire in Greenwich Village on Friday, authorities said.

Leon Gold was found dead inside his apartment shortly after firefighters responded to his apartment building at 37 W 12 St., authorities said. Firefighters responded to the blaze on the 10th floor of the 13-story building at about 9 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said, minutes after the call came in. Gold was found unconscious and unresponsive inside his apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was under control by 9:37, the spokesman said.

A fire department official on the scene told reporters that the fire was inside to just one apartment inside the building.

"It was a pretty extensive fire contained to one apartment," he said.

One other person was injured in the fire, but the official said that person declined medical attention.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire, but no criminal activity is suspected, authorities said.
