Cyclist Dies After Being Hit By Car In Chelsea, Police Say

Josef Mittlemann died from his injuries in the crash.

CHELSEA, NY — A cyclist was fatally injured in a collision with a car in Chelsea, police said.

Josef Mittlemann, 67, died after he was hit by a car near West 30th Street and 11th Avenue on Nov. 28, according to the NYPD.

Mittlemann was cycling south on 11th Avenue at about 1:50 p.m. when he rode through a red light at West 30th Street, according to police. A car traveling east on 30th Street hit Mittlemann as he entered the intersection, seriously injuring him. The cyclist suffered serious head injuries and died two days later.

The 39-year-old driver of the car remained at the scene after the crash, police said.

Mittlemann previously worked as a professor at Brown University, his alma matter, according to his obituary in the New York Times.
