The High Line’s New Prairie Section Gets a "Teen Takeover”
Members of High Line's Teen Program take up responsibility for all new plants and tall grasses of the elevated park's new Prairie section

Starting Friday, April 21, members of the High Line Teens program were given responsibility caring for plants in the elevated park’s brand-new Prairie—a half-block long section of tall grasses and flowers. The teens started on Friday by carefully weeding the area, and will be returning in May for new plantings. The work is part of the Horticulture Learning Pathway of the Teen Program, which gives youth from the surrounding neighborhood and high schools hands-on experience exploring new career paths.
Through this program, Amiya Gonzalez, a teen participant, has found her passion for horticulture and has decided to accept an offer to Syracuse University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
"We are proud to be able to work alongside these teens as they take up stewardship of this new beautiful section of the High Line. It's amazing to see how these young people have developed their passion for horticulture through this program,” said Alan van Capelle, Executive Director of the High Line.
